Collaboration is Key (Learning Activity 5-1)

Sharing ideas with others is an essential part of learning and continuing to gain knowledge. This is true for both children and adult learners. Learning from others and then making things your own is something teachers do all the time. However, what you do not realize is that there are times when teachers learn something new from students, too. Everyone offers different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds that can help one learn something new or change the way you view something. It is important to include collaborative projects in your classroom. It is also important to teach students the importance of sharing opinions and ideas in respectful ways, knowing their audiences, and also how to respond properly to others.

  1. I totally agree with the importance of teaching students how to share opinions and ideas in respectful ways! I believe this has to be a future-ready skill!

  2. Accountable Talk was always the challenge in my room as well. I had posters of sentence starters that we would practice with in small groups. The posters were from qualitityeducator.net - but I could not find a link to the posters. They were geared to elementary students, but it definitely helped as a reminder of expectations. We practiced a lot in the first month so it became habit.
I was not quite sure how to have a visible reminder in a virtual classroom with Zoom, short of a Slide starting the activity. However, they did use it because I gave points when I reviewed their chats/ comments. I think a visual helps them, and encourages the students to remind their peers to use Accountable Talk because it is part of their participation grade.

  3. I love your statement "Everyone offers different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds that can help one learn something new or change the way you view something." This is so true. The diversity of our world allows us to learn from others. Being open to what perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds others bring to a situation can teach us so much.
