The Pandemic factoring into the use of Zoom/Google Meet (Learning Activity 7-5)

Before the Pandemic I can honestly say I never used Zoom or Google Meet before. Since the Pandemic, I used Zoom a handful of times and Google Meet more than I can count. Last year once March 13th came around and schools were shut down, we had meetings weekly with our virtual students as well as with my team teachers. The faculty meetings and team teacher meetings were held on Zoom, but the student meets were on Google Meet. There are so many benefits of having a tool right on hand to connect with others. You can share screens, show your face, present awards, teach lessons, and so much more.

Having both in-house students along with virtual students poses a challenge at times. However, tools like Google Meet make it easy to allow virtual students to still be “with” their classmates. Moving forward I will continue to use Google Meet for weekly virtual meetings, when collaboration is needed between in-house students and virtual students, and for mini lessons with students.

Over the summer months, I will continue to use Zoom or Google Meet to connect with my team teachers when talking about plans for the future. Using these tools with faculty, principals, and students is key for success in today’s learning environment.

  1. Gina it is great to hear about your collaboration of Zoomers and Roomers! I do worry that we won't all be face-to-face, all day, everyday come September, so it is nice to know that it creates a community of learners.
I think I prefer some of those faculty meetings to be virtual - the organization required to pull off a successful meeting with shared documents means that administration needs to act like a teacher with a plan to progress through the material. I also think that after this time, more teachers will feel comfortable meeting outside their districts, now that the travel is eliminated.

  2. I love that your online students and face to face students are able to interact even though they are not all in the same place. The tools Meet and Zoom provide to allow us to continue to provide education during the pandemic are irreplaceable. I love that students are still able to share even though they are not in the same physical space. I do have to say, I rather enjoy Zoom faculty meetings :)

  3. It is good to read that something negative like the pandemic has helped you become more familiar and comfortable with these tools. I agree that conferencing tools also help virtual students feel more physically "present" in the class alongside their face-to-face peers. I feel Google Meet is really the better fit for students who are used to using Google for Education tools already.
